Additional Handling and Large Package surcharges: UPS & FedEx rules and billing errors
If you ship long, heavy or bulky items — furniture, fitness equipment, golf bags, fishing rods, art supplies — Additional Handling and Large Package surcharges can be the biggest extra on your UPS and FedEx invoices. They are tens of dollars per package, and they are applied from carrier measurements that are not always right.
Additional Handling: the main triggers
Both UPS and FedEx add an Additional Handling surcharge when a package is heavy, long or not fully enclosed in a corrugated box. The usual triggers are: a longest side over about 48 inches, a second-longest side over about 30 inches, an actual weight over about 50 lb, or packaging such as wood, metal, plastic wrap or cylindrical tubes.
Thresholds and amounts change with each year's rate guide, so check the current service guide and your contract.
Large Package (Oversize): length plus girth
A Large Package surcharge applies to bigger boxes: generally when length plus girth exceeds about 130 inches, the longest side exceeds about 96 inches, or (for UPS) the cubic size is above a set volume. Girth is twice the width plus twice the height. Large packages are also billed at a minimum billable weight, often around 90 lb, even if they weigh much less.
When a Large Package surcharge applies, the Additional Handling surcharge for size is usually not charged on top of it.
Billing errors to look for
Surcharge on a box that is below the limits: compare the carrier's dimensions with your packaging. A carrier re-measurement can be off by a few inches — enough to cross a threshold.

How to dispute
Keep your box sizes on file (SKU dimensions or packaging specs) — they are your evidence. For each affected package send the tracking number, invoice number, the real dimensions and weight and the amount. File through UPS Billing Center or FedEx Billing Online, or send your account representative one spreadsheet with all packages.
Use our free DIM weight calculator to check billable weight and whether a box crosses the limits.
Automating the check
ParcelAudit compares every package's dimensions and weight with the Additional Handling and Large Package limits, flags surcharges that don't apply and duplicate fees, and prepares the dispute letter. Upload or forward your UPS or FedEx invoice; the first audit is free and you keep 100% of the refunds.
